Founder of Sans [ceuticals] shares her star products and past, present and future dreams

What first inspired Sans [ceuticals] creation?

I started developing Sans [ceuticals] in 2007. It was born from a frustration of not being able to find pure, natural, results-driven products that were also thoughtfully designed and sustainable. I was working closely with a couple of dermatologists, so I really got to understand skin at a fundamental level. I wanted products that could have a noticeable effect on skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Because of my background as a hair stylist, I also wanted to create high-performance hair care that had the ability to repair damaged hair. Creating a natural, performance-driven formulation has been something of a challenge with hair care, but I believe we have finally achieved it. When I was studying to become a hairdresser, I fell in love with trichology — a medical and cosmetic study of the hair and scalp. I have always loved science and am a voracious researcher. I also spent a lot of time with a dear friend who is a biotech scientist carrying out exciting research in the field of cancer. She is a massive beauty junkie and would spend hours talking me through ingredients and how cells work.

Name one beauty product that will always be a star in your eyes?

Our Activator 7 Body + Hair + Face Oil. Because I have kids, I live by the rule of quick, simple but effective! Our hero cult product Activator 7 Body + Hair + Face Oil does everything! It’s a super serum that packs a punch with its high concentration of vitamin A. I put a few drops in my face cream at night for an added boost and use it on the ends of my hair as a smoothing and hydrating serum. I shave my legs with it, remove my eye makeup (when I remember), and also use it post-shower as an amazing daily body oil.

Favourite beauty ritual or treatment?

I’m not a big fan of facials or lavish beauty treatments. My favourite thing is a bath, a glass of red wine, and doing our ‘Pro Facial’ ritual. It’s a combination of layering our Luminosity Masque, skin icing and Sleep Infusion Masque. It gives the most incredible results.

Dream holiday destination?

Either Great Barrier here in Auckland or Mexico. I just love their food, art and their red clay pottery.

Favourite winter indulgence?

I love the contrast therapy at Hana in Grey Lynn.

What are you reading or listening to at the moment?

John Fahey and Goldmund. Great music for cooking on dark winter nights.

Wildest dream or vision for the future?

For the world to be carbon positive.
