Where does your bravery come from in mixing colour, pattern and objects?

I am actually not quite sure. I think the only thing I can say is that I was brought up living at the beach and the vibrant colours of that natural landscape have always been an inspiration to me.

Have you observed any particular style requests trending among your clients?

I think clients come to me as they are looking for quality and rooms that feel comfortable and familiar. I think my style is very much in that vein.

In your view, what distinguishes great design from good design?

Being able to achieve awe-inspiring rooms that are also able to stand the test of time and be very practical and comfortable.

Your work emits a true sense of joy. Is this an outcome you intentionally strive for?

Absolutely. We should all strive to live in joyful rooms surrounded by things that make us feel happy.

Favourite room in your own home and what does it look like?

I love my new sitting room in our home in Melbourne. It has towering 4+metre ceilings and I’ve painted the walls in a very soft pale pink with beautiful antique furniture and modern art, including a recent colourful abstract painting by Australian artist Belem Lett, which I absolutely adore.

Where are you finding creative inspiration this season?

I am about to head overseas on a round-the-world trip with my partner Luke, so I hope that sparks many fresh new thoughts and ideas.

Can you share the last homeware item or piece of furniture you bought?

A set of beautiful Venetian Murano drinking glasses from the Pan After store in Melbourne.

What is the most important interior design lesson you’ve learnt along your journey?

Buy the very best quality you can afford, always.

What advice would you lend to the next generation of creatives?

Think outside of the box and always go against the tide.

Any exciting collections or collaborations on the horizon?

We are just opening our new bricks-and-mortar store called Spiro Store in New Farm, Brisbane next week, which will be filled with amazing, unique treasures.
