Trends! Influencers! Fashion! Hair! Where to start and how does all this work together?

We are so lucky these days to have vast access to a variety of content to be inspired by. Back in the Stone Age, it was a trip into London to flick through the latest editorials and ad campaigns. I do miss that though, the smell of fresh ink on a page as you pored over the latest and greatest. There’s something to be said about taking the time to appreciate all the work that went into an image as you got ink-stained fingers from all the flicking. So how is all this linked to the amazing craft we call hairdressing and where are we headed?

Taking inspiration from things like fashion, music or even a TV series are ways to evolve and build creativity. It’s not just about looking at the hair and going, ‘that’s what I’ll do’. Go deeper. Look at lighting, styling, attitude. What’s the mood? It might sound a little wanky but being able to take those emotions and create something is so powerful. It doesn’t have to be literal. It only takes one thing from a trace of inspiration to transform your looks into something new. There is no right or wrong in letting your mind run wild and processing creativity.

For a while now, we’ve seen a little bit of copycat trends happening amongst the industry and it was getting stale. Within the last few months, I’ve started seeing more people stepping outside their comfort zone and taking some well-calculated risks. We’ve seen this through the requests for more cutting education. Our H Team educators at Haircare Group are always getting to show some of the latest and greatest looks but looks that are still friendly enough that your clients feel comfortable. Right now, the trend is ‘Change’. Jump off that bandwagon and go straight into the deep end. If Kimmy K can move from a centre part to a side, everyone can take a little risk in their look!

We have seen amazing fashion houses jumping in the deep end, showing that for things to be beautiful and accepting, it doesn’t always have to be soft and pretty. Look at Chanel with Kristen Stewart: that little micro-fringe pixie was so beautiful and elegant but it had a sprinkle of attitude, so we got ‘elegant chic pixie grunge’. This is a perfect example of jumping off the bandwagon and trying something new in shape and texture.

With the trend being change, the idea of working with natural textures or low-key styling is huge. Trying out your Cloud Nine Sericite Airshot and diffuser with a little Evo liquid rollers is perfect to bring out the natural goodness hidden away and show off some real beauty. Working with a Cloud Nine Curling Wand to push that texture into something effortless is insane. And please use your Moroccanoil Perfect Defense for weightless heat protection! If you’re a middle ‘parter’ but want an awesome amount of volume, grab your Color Wow Raise the Root and spritz onto dry hair, hold up and dry. Flip to the side and va-voom! Sexy, trendy volume.

So in closing, take a risk. Don’t be afraid to jump outside the box and take influence from things you’re into. You will attract clients that relate to you and your passions. You are your own brand. Happy hairdressing!
